NATURAL SIMULACRA I
Sculpture, 2x - 24” x 24” X 12”, 2024 - Using upcycled EPS foam originally destined for a landfill, this work examines the concept of simulating elements of nature with a material that is currently destroying it.
“Natural Simulacra I” was created with the intention of simulating elements of nature, i.e. rock, water, with a material that is actively destroying it, namely EPS foam. These conceptual aspects are placed in stark and jarring contrast to each other in order to comment on the irrationality of human thought concerning our environment and future on this planet. The work considers a future where our natural environment is so compromised or otherwise inaccessible that our very ability to view or experience it may only be through various simulations, whether digital or physical.
The sculpture was created by using upcycled and leftover EPS foam. This material is used in several different industries and is considered to be harmful to the environment both in its petroleum-derived creation and its ultimate 500-year bio-degradation cycle. I myself sometimes work with this material while participating in the entertainment and commercial industries of the Los Angeles area, specifically Hollywood. A tangential theme to this work’s concept is that of how to live ethically within a broken system. As a freelance artist and fabricator I only partially am able to choose factors of aesthetic or fabrication elements within pieces I am commissioned to make or design for commercial productions. Can we rationalize the choices we make which may be harmful to our environment with the reality of our circumstance as often unwilling participants in an environmentally-unconscious system of society and even more specifically - Capitalism?
It is my personal vow to only create new works within this Natural Simulacra series with upcycled or leftover environmentally harmful materials, and to never purchase them new for use in these works.
